Favorites of the Year
I am rapidly appraoching my 20th cycle around the sun, and decided to make a "favorites" list of videos, music, books, and essays I encountered this year for the occasion.
Best videos:
"The Internet's Own Boy" is a documentary covering the life of Aaron Swartz, an important programmer and internet activist of the 00's. He was one of the primary contributers to Creative Commons, OpenLibrary, and Reddit, as well as the creator of RSS feeds. He was prosecuted by the federal government on charges of computer and wire fraud in 2011, and commited suicide while his case was in litigation. His crime was downloading a large quanity of JSTOR articles he was authorized to access. His story is incredibly important, and I urage anyone who regularly acesses academic journals watch this documentary.
The Youtuber F4MI is what originally led me to NeoCities and making this site. This is one of my favorite videos she has made. Music streaming has changed so much in the last few decades, and she covers a great way to combine multiple platforms (CDs, MP3 files, streaming services) all into one place using open-source software and an old-school sound system.
